Italy; a country in many ways characterized by its ancient history, local traditions and folklore, has one of the highest elderly populations in the world. Having moved back to Milan in 2019 and being able to spend more time with my maternal grandparents, I wanted to capture this phenomenon in all its significance and diversity.
This was simply the starting point; the project soon transformed into a profound journey across Italy's archaic dimensions, with five chapters exploring the relationship between the ‘old’, fleeting world and the new age, with time as the central theme.
The words that accompany the first chapter are from William Shakespeare's King Lear, which contains a profound reflection on old age, generational conflict and the end of man's power over himself and the world.
